Microbial Fuel Cell Technologies, LLC (MFC Technologies) is developing alternative approaches for alternative energy with the intention of transforming the biofuel industry. The company was started in 2006 and is focused on the development of technology that can be used to produce biofuels such as ethanol, hydrogen, electricity or other products from renewable cellulosic biomass or waste.
The patent-pending processes under development with the Medical University of South Carolina double the yield of biofuels from renewable feedstocks (not food crops or fossil fuels) versus today’s standard. MFC Technologies has received funding from the Department of Energy and SC Launch! in support of commercial development of the technology, and was awarded the Crystal Flame Award for Entrepreneurship from FuelCellSouth in 2008.
