Medical University of South Carolina

Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is the South’s oldest medical school. The primary research focus areas at MUSC are Cancer, Neurosciences and Cardiology/GI. One of the objectives at MUSC is to build an environment that is nurturing to the faculty and investigators as the university. This is accomplished through:

  • The development of Incubator Space with SCRA
  • Partnership with South Carolina’s two other research universities, Clemson and USC
  • Create a system for the commercialization of discoveries at the university
  • Pursue State, Federal and Private funding opportunities

MUSC’s research funding for FY 2009 is approximately $217 million

The Foundation for Research Development (FRD) @ MUSC

The Foundation for Research Development (FRD) @ MUSC is charged with harnessing the research coming out of MUSC and moving it to the private sector. The FRD serves as the front door for industry. The FRD is interested in identifying individuals/companies who are interested in participating in some of the available opportunities at MUSC

Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce

Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce is engaged in several initiatives to promote Charleston’s Knowledge Industry such as:

  • Kaufmann Institute – FastTrac® training
  • EXECNET
  • Innovation Summit
  • Life Sciences Boot Camp

The Charleston Metro Chamber is also involved with lobbying the various legislative bodies for legislation that improves the business climate of the Tri-County region.

Charleston Life Sciences

Charleston Life Sciences (CLS) is an initiative of the City of Charleston’s Business Development Office. It operates as a comprehensive one stop shop for companies seeking assistance with locating, operating and growing their business in the City of Charleston. With direct legislative access, CLS serves in multiple capacities such as:

  • Assisting companies with business needs such as site location, transitional office space capital, human resources, incentives, PR and Networking.
  • Identifying and developing short and longer term physical locations for Life Sciences companies.
  • Developing a network of resources to benefit Charleston’s Life Science Companies.
  • Acting as the conduit to receive, disseminate and share relevant information among life sciences companies.
  • Pursuing municipal legislative changes to benefit the life sciences community.

South Carolina Research Authority

South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA) is focused on Applied Research and Commercialization opportunities. This is accomplished by:

SCRA is currently renovating a previously utilized industrial building in Downtown Charleston into an Innovation Center, complete with wet lab and professional office space. This facility will be available for occupancy December 2009.

New Carolina

New Carolina is the official name for South Carolina's Council on Competitiveness, a public-private partnership working with partners to increase per capita income and drive the movement towards a New Carolina – a South Carolina with a brighter future and a competitive, winning economy.

New Carolina is charged with implementing the strategic plan authored by Harvard Professor, Michael Porter. Their objectives are to:

  • Play to the strengths of core industries: find, birth, build and celebrate clusters
  • Change the economic environment through innovation in business and education
  • Connect the dots across efforts and start conversations around positive change

SC Bio

SC Bio is a public/private, not-for-profit organization composed of industry, university, and private entities collaborating to develop new life science companies in South Carolina.  SC Bio is a catalyst that aids in commercialization supporting financial growth, process development, and marketing for emerging life science companies.  Specifically, SC Bio focuses on the following areas:

  • Creation of jobs in research, development, and manufacturing in South Carolina.
  • Create new companies developing novel new biotech products.
  • Retain research from universities in South Carolina.

Palmetto Bio

Palmetto Bio is a member managed and owned association. Palmetto Bio is recognized by BIO as the South Carolina affiliated state chapter. The vision of Palmetto Bio is to create an inclusive alliance of individuals across South Carolina interested in the growth of life science research and manufacturing.

Palmetto Bio is responsible for an annual conference as well as other member events and activities. Additional alliance services may include legislative and regulatory lobby, employment networking, services guide/assistance, BIO discount procurement program, and other services traditional to state biotech associations.

The Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA) is a partnership of business and government (Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties) working to create a sustainable, globally competitive regional economy. Our focus areas include:

  • Promoting the Charleston region worldwide as a top location for business and talent (aligned with the region’s existing and emerging high-value industry clusters)
  • Working directly with companies to assist them with competitive location or expansion projects
