Charles River Laboratories is a global provider of research models, preclinical and early phase clinical services that advance the drug discovery and development process. The company division that is located Charleston, SC, specializes in the development of new technologies and innovative products that improve the quality of testing of therapeutic drugs and medical devices.
This division, first known as Endosafe, was founded by Dr. James Cooper, a pioneer in the development and commercialization of the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) assay, an in vitro test for the detection of endotoxins. The LAL assay is derived from the circulating blood cells of the horseshoe crab.
The company provides a wide range of products and services including endotoxin detection assays, hardware and software solutions, accessory products and contract testing services. In 2006, the FDA approved Charles River's Endosafe - PTS, a handheld, self-contained endotoxin testing system that provides test results in one-fourth of the time it takes for traditional LAL assays. New testing applications building on the PTS platform are in development presently including studies being conducted by NASA on board the International Space Station. |
